Partnership Opportunities
The Apolline Project is first and foremost an open research group. While Suor Orsola and Federico II Universities in Naples formally act as hosting institutions, the Project was founded with the idea that it would be open to all Universities who can profitably contribute to the Project’s goals. We encourage an open partnership with individual scholars and institutions who request participation. They can conduct studies on previous or current excavations, or start on a new site in the region where permission has already been granted.
The Apolline Project primarily investigates the ancient territories of Neapolis and Nola in the northern region of Vesuvius in an attempt to increase collective understanding of the interactions that took place across this region, with the southern regions which include Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as extending into other areas of the Empire through trade patterns. Due to the volcanic activity in the area, there are often extraordinary levels of preservation; even including types of bioarchaeological data.
The research is multidisciplinary and includes studies in volcanology, osteology, palaeobotany, pottery, and archaeozoology just to name a few. We regularly publish our findings from the multiple sites that have already been excavated. We are particularly interested in scholars and institutions who wish to further develop new aspects of research that have not yet been explored, or which we have only partially researched. Some examples of this include ground-penetrating radar, new ways of recording/visualizing data, a complete analysis of epigraphical evidence, etc. We are always open to new ideas and approaches.
The Apolline Project is a combined network of many different scholars, institutions, and ideas. The Director collaborates with researchers to decide on areas of study within the region which will further benefit the goals of the Project, but researchers have complete autonomy to publish their results independently.
